Overview

Eni S.p.A., formerly known as Ente Nazionale Idrocarburi, is a multinational oil and gas company headquartered in Rome, Italy. Founded in 1953 by the Italian government, Eni is an integrated energy company involved in the exploration, production, refining, and marketing of oil and natural gas. The company operates globally and is publicly traded on the Milan Stock Exchange, and is part of the Euro Stoxx 50 stock market index.

The Italian government, through the Ministry of Economy and Finance and Cassa Depositi e Prestiti, maintains a significant stake in Eni. The company describes its headquarters as central to managing its global operations, coordinating business units, and developing its strategic vision.

History

Eni's history dates to the post-World War II era, when Italy sought to establish its energy independence. The company was created through the merger of Agip (Azienda Generale Italiana Petroli) and various state-owned entities. Over the decades, Eni expanded its operations internationally.

In the 1990s, Eni fully integrated Agip's international operations. Acquisitions include British Borneo Oil & Gas in 2000, which enhanced its presence in the North Sea and Gulf of Mexico; Lasmo, a UK-based oil and gas company, in 2001; Distrigas, a Belgian natural gas company, in 2008; and interests in exploration blocks in Uganda from Heritage Oil's Ugandan assets in 2012. In recent years, Eni has also acquired renewable energy assets, including solar and wind projects.

Headquarters and Operations

Eni's global headquarters is in Rome, Italy. The main office, known as the Eni Building or Palazzo Eni, was designed by architect Marco Bacigalupo and completed in 1962. In addition to its Rome headquarters, Eni maintains operational centers in various countries where it has major projects or subsidiaries, including Milan, Italy; London, United Kingdom; and Houston, Texas in the United States. These regional hubs support management of its portfolio and relationships with local partners and stakeholders.

Business Sectors

Eni operates across several key business sectors within the energy industry:

  • Exploration & Production (E&P): Eni's core business, focusing on exploration, development, and production of oil and natural gas. Eni has a presence in Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia, the Americas, and Europe, with expertise in deep-water exploration and production and operations in challenging environments.
  • Gas & Power: Involved in supply, trading, and marketing of gas and electricity. Eni operates an extensive network of pipelines and has interests in liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects. The division also manages power generation assets and is increasingly focusing on renewable energy sources.
  • Refining & Marketing: Downstream operations including oil refining, fuel distribution, and retail sales. Eni operates several refineries across Europe and a network of service stations in various countries. It is also involved in production and marketing of petrochemical products.
  • Chemicals: Through subsidiary Versalis, Eni is active in production and marketing of petrochemical products, including plastics, rubbers, and specialty chemicals. This division focuses on developing innovative and sustainable chemical solutions.
  • Renewable Energy: Eni has been expanding its presence in the renewable energy sector, including investments in solar, wind, and biofuel projects. The company aims to increase its renewable energy capacity as part of its long-term strategy to reduce its carbon footprint.
